Prevent Treat and how to Survive Breast Cancer | 15th August, 2017

Did you know 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer? The good new is that a healthy diet and exercise routine can reduce your chance of breast cancer by nearly 40%! It is important to know the symptoms of breast cancer because when caught early, breast cancer has a 98% survival rate.

 
SYMPTOMS TO KNOW:
  • A lump or thickening in the breast
  • A change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • A nipple turned inward
  • Discharge from the nipple
  • Scaly, red, or swollen skin on the breast or nipple Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health during a diagnosis like cancer. 
 
Talk to someone you can trust about how you feel
  • Sleep well most of the time
  • Eat healthy
  • Exercise regularly
  • Find joy in helping others
  • Treat yourself and others with kindness
  • Make time for yourself
Your body will undoubtedly go through many changes, and at time will maybe even feel foreign to you. To stay as healthy as possible and feel like yourself, maintain wise nutritional decisions. Check out our grocery list and healthy recipes for healthy options when grocery shopping. Making nutritional choices is one of the best defenses against breast cancer. Here are a few tips that you can put to work in your own life:
 
Eat your vegetables! At least 2/3 of your plate should be fresh vegetables and whole grains.
Start your day with a whole grain cereal. Top with fruit to mix it up!
Add asparagus, beans, and sunflower seeds to your lunch salad for even more folate.
Think tomatoes. Add them to your salad, toast, or just eat them plain! The lycopene is linked to reducing cancerous cells.
Go green…with your tea! Green tea consumption has been proven to slow development of cancer.
Limit or eliminate alcohol. Replace with water or green tea!
Cook wisely. Stew, braise or stem rather than fry, grill or broil.
Getting physical is another great way to stay healthy and keep moving. Exercise may not be your number one to-do while dealing with a diagnosis, but make it a priority to get even 20-30 minutes in a day. We have a few tips to help you:
 
  • Make it social
  • Switch it up
  • Make a schedule
  • Exercise even when you think you are too tired
  • Keep an exercise journal or goal sheet
  • Reward yourself
  • Be flexible, and listen to your body
 
The following are steps you can take to lower your risk:
  • Limit alcohol. The more alcohol you drink, the greater your risk of developing breast cancer.
  • Don not smoke. 
  • Control your weight.
  • Be physically active.
  • Breast-feed. 
  • Limit dose and duration of hormone therapy.
  • Avoid exposure to radiation and environmental pollution.
