President Akufo-Addo assures nurses, midwives of employment | 02nd May, 2017

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday assured unemployed nurses and midwives that government would soon absorb them into the country’s health system, stating, “Ghana needs all its trained manpower to be at work.”

Acknowledging the recent sit-ins by a group of nurses and midwives at the Ministry of Health, he said: “My government is your government and we are listening to your concerns. We are determined that, together, we will find sustainable solutions. Ghana needs all its trained manpower to be at work.”

President Akufo-Addo gave the assurance when he addressed organised labour at the 17th National May Day Parade at the Black Star Square in Accra. The Day was observed under the theme: “Ghana@60; Mobilizing for Ghana’s Future through the Creation of Decent Jobs.”

He noted that in the run-up to the 2016 elections, “the subject of nurses and teachers featured a lot in the recent elections. There was the vexed question of their allowances. We promised to restore them and we have.”

He also said he was aware of the uneasy calm within some occupational and professional groups among public sector workers, assuring that those concerns would be addressed in the course of time.

President Akufo-Addo also used the occasion to draw attention to the issue of corruption, reiterating his government’s determination to use all available tools to fight the canker before it destroyed the country’s chances at progress and prosperity.

He stressed that “the Office of Special Prosecutor is going to be established so that the prosecution of corruption is taken out of political controversy to enhance the integrity of the rule of law.”
