The Ghana Oil Company Limited, (GOIL) the nation’s foremost indigenous Oil Marketing Company (OMC) on Wednesday donated 1,000 hospital beds and 1,000 mattresses to the Ministry of Health for onward re-distribution to the regions.

The beds had special features both for the comfort and well-being of the patient and for the convenience of health care workers; adjustable height for the entire bed, the head, and the feet, and adjustable side rails.

Mr Patrick Kwame Akpe Akorli, Group Chief Executive of GOIL told the Ghana News Agency on the side-lines of the presentation that, patients deserved better and GOIL decided to join government to promote well-being of our patients.

“As a corporate entity, we believe that the best promotional package is to share profit with the people who helped pushed us to the high point in the industry, the Board of Directors and Management therefore decided to support health care,” Mr Akorli who is also known as Togbe Adza-Nye IV Dutorfia of Ziavi in the Volta Region noted.

He said patients’ well-being is a joint responsibility - family, health facilities, health practitioners, government, corporate world and the community; “we must all join resources to ensure that we create a healthy environment at our hospitals for both patient and health practitioners”.

The distribution list obtained by the GNA indicated that the Upper East and Upper West Regions were to receive 50 beds and mattresses each; and Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions would receive 150 beds and mattresses.

Others are; the Volta, Central, Northern, Western, Eastern, and Brong Ahafo Regions would receive 100 beds and mattresses each.

Ms Tina Mensah, Deputy Minister of Health who received the beds on behalf of the sector Minister commended GOIL for contributing to the socio-economic development of the health sector.

She said GOIL’s gesture would boost Ministry of Health’s mission to promote health and vitality through access to quality health for all people living in Ghana using motivated personnel.

She said the government’s policy thrust was to reduce inequities in access to care and increase coverage, quality and use of health services so as to achieve a healthier national population.

Ms Mensah explained that to improve the health status of all people living in Ghana through effective and efficient policy formulation, resource mobilisation, monitoring and regulation of delivery of health care by different health agencies, the ministry needs the support of corporate Ghana.

Mr Owuraku Aidoo, Deputy Minister of Energy also commended GOIL for contributing to the promotion of healthy healthcare: “Ghanaians should continue to patronise GOIL products and services”.

The items were jointly presented to the two Deputy Ministers by Professor Zoom Zoom Azumah Nelson, Former World Boxing Champion and GOIL Brand Ambassador.

GOIL was incorporated as a private limited liability company on June 14, 1960 as AGIP Ghana Company Limited with the objective of marketing petroleum products and related products particularly fuels, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), lubricants, bitumen, and specialty products in Ghana.

The Government of Ghana in 1974 acquired the shares of AGIP SPA and Hydrocarbons International Holdings in AGIP Ghana Company Limited and by a special resolution in 1976 changed the name of the company to Ghana Oil Company Limited.

By a shareholders resolution passed on August 1st, 2007 the Company adopted new regulations and was converted into a public company. Between 2010 and 2012 the Company underwent a transformation process aimed at changing its logo, station outlook, and most importantly the corporate culture which was dubbed “Good Energy comes with a Smile”.

Though the Company’s main business is marketing and distribution of petroleum products in Ghana, one of the tenets of the New GOIL is to move beyond the current frontiers to marketing and distribution of energy products in general.

GOIL has the largest retail network across the country. The company also has numerous consumer outlets throughout Ghana. The consumer outlets include companies, schools, hospitals, factories, hotels, banks and major parastatals.

In addition, there are a number of other retail outlets established to market premix fuel and kerosene to rural areas. LP Gas filling plants have also been installed at some of the filling and service stations and at other locations in the country.

Currently, GOIL’s technical partners are ENI SPA (AGIP) of Italy.
