Do not rely on Commercial Blood Donors for blood | 24th July, 2017

Mrs Ajaratu Issah, Head of Blood Mobilisation Unit of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital has called on Ghanaians not to rely on Commercial Blood Donors for blood.

She indicated that they should rather depend on voluntary donors to feed their Blood banks.

According to her, apart from the unsafe nature of blood most commercial donors give, the amount of between GH¢200.00 and GH¢400.00, they charged was unacceptable.

Mrs Issah made the call when the National Health Insurance Scheme and the Ghana Health Service organised blood donation campaign at the Bolgatanga Girls Senior High School.

Mrs Issah indicated that one of the safest way to get blood was through encouraging young people to donate, stressing that unlike the young people whose blood was more purified, it was not so with adults.

She stressed that it was against that background that the Regional Health Directorate over the years had been collaborating with the Regional Directorate of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in mobilising blood donation programmes among students in second cycle institutions in the region.

Mr Sebastian Alagpulinsa, the Regional Director of the NHIA stated that the intention of his outfit to partner with the GHS to organise the blood donation exercise was part of the social responsibility of the Authority.

The Headmistress of the Bolgatanga SHS, Mrs Rose Avonsige pledged that the school would always avail its service to humanity, and urged other schools to join the crusade in donating blood.
